Oct 2009 SUM Minutes                      Back to Service Unit Calendar & Meeting Minutes

Minutes of Service Unit Meeting, Oct. 1, 2009

Deb Knapp opened the first SUM of the year by welcoming everyone - Service Unit Manager Carmela Arale was unable to attend.

Deb noted that a volunteer is needed to coordinate the town's Family Giving campaign. This would be an ideal position for a troop mom who is not able to help with meetings. If anyone is interested, please contact Deb Knapp.

Deb is also handling the registration for this year. 2008-2009 memberships expired on Oct. 1st, so if you have not yet registered your troop, please do so immediately. Unregistered troops may not participate in the fall nuts/candy sale or have troop meetings.

We have several new Daisy troops formed already. There are 2 Mountain Park Daisy troops and 1 Woodruff troop, all of which are now full. There are 2 new Daisy troops formed for Hughes school, and these both have room for new girls. If you know of a girl who would like to join a kindergarten Daisy troop, contact Barb Smith.

Our CAC delegates are in the final months of their commitments as volunteers. We need new delegates as of Jan. 1st, 2010. These delegates attend a few meetings per year with others from around the council. Please contact Carmela if you are willing to volunteer, or for more information.

Our nuts and candy sale is currently ongoing. The sale ends on Oct. 25th, and all money has to be turned in to Linda Haines by Oct. 30th. Please collect all money for products at the time of the sale, and deposit all checks before you give a troop check to Linda. The council will be cashing troop checks much quicker this year than they used to, and your troop bank account must be able to cover the amount. As a reminder, you may not do any other fundraising for your troop without participating in the nuts/candy and cookie sale first.

Since there are troops interested in purchasing T-shirts, we will be running the sale again. The catalog will be at the next SUM, and the order will be placed in November. Margaret Illis will send an e-mail to new troops explaining the details.

We will also be attempting to organize another First Aid/CPR class in town, since the last one was a great success. This will be the American Heart Assoc. CPR class, which is good for 2 years.

Our annual Mitten Tree holiday service event will be held on Dec. 5th, at 4:00, and will conclude in time for the Berkeley Heights tree-lighting celebration. Troops will be asked to bring an ornament for the tree, as well as a knitted item and can of food to donate.

The Teddy Bear Tea date will be announced soon. This year it will be open only to kindergarten Brownies.

We may be able to schedule a winter encampment for March, for 4th graders and older. Margaret Illis will confirm that Hoover is open for a weekend, and will send an e-mail to troops. We will not be having a summer encampment this year, so this may be our only chance to go to Hoover this year.

We are trying to schedule a Mommy and Me camping trip also, and Susan O'Donnell will be looking into Jockey Hollow as a possible site.

The Someone Special and Me dance will be open to Girl Scouts in kindergarten through 4th grade, and a date will be announced soon.

Finally, it's a long way off, but we will be needing someone to coordinate the troops for the Memorial Day parade next May.

PLEASE CHECK THE BERKELEY HEIGHTS GIRL SCOUT WEBSITE FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ANY OF THESE PROGRAMS, AND TO CONTACT THE SERVICE UNIT MEMBERS.
